Shelly Silver Work Resume 2001-present Faculty, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, School of Art The Cooper Union is one of New York's premiere art schools. Due to a generous endowment from Peter Cooper at its inception, it is also the only art school in the United States that is tuition free, which leads to a more diverse student body. I teach Intermediate Video, a course which combines production, the history of video art and critical studies. 1999-present Faculty, School of Visual Arts MFA Photography & Related Media SVA Master of Fine Arts Photography & Related Media Program is a small, intense and creative program with a fast-growing video component. I currently teach 'Video Culture' a course which explores the relationship between contemporary video theory and practice. 1999-present Co-Organizer, Nomads & Residents 1999 Nomads & Residents is a loose group of artists, organizers and curators involved in organizing informal evening events around contemporary issues; connecting people who live here with those that are just passing through. We invite artists, curators, critics, activists and travelers to present insights into their practice, ideas, histories and drives. 1990-present President, House Productions House Productions is a production and post-production company. Depending on the size of the project, my roles include producer, editor and cameraperson. Recent clients have included Gluckman Maynor Architects, Steven Holl Architects, Sarah Hanamura House, Japan. 1993-1999 Visiting Professor, ESEC, Paris, France ESEC/Ecole Supˇrieure libre d'Etudes Cinˇmatographiques is the premiere private film and video academy in France. As a regular visiting professor at ESEC, I have taught intensive video workshops on documentary, fiction and experimental strategies, as well as giving a series of public presentations. 1998 Adjunct Faculty, College of Staten Island/CUNY Students attending universities that are part of the City University of New York are extremely diverse in terms of educational, social background and nationality, due to the systems very reasonable tuition as well as its open admissions policy. Because of this, teaching within CUNY has its real challenges and rewards. I taught both Introduction to Video Production as well as Advanced Experimental Film and Video. 1996 Adjunct Faculty, New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Department of Film & Television, Experimental Video Workshop New York University has one of the foremost film schools in the country. I taught Experimental Video Workshop, which explored a number of different approaches to non-conventional videomaking. The class was both a production and discussion class; each student produced a series of experimental videotapes, while being exposed to the history of video art. 1994 Artist Fellow, The United States-Japan Creative Artists Fellowship Program through the National Endowment for the Arts The Japan/US Friendship Commission invites five American artists from all disciplines each year to spend six months living and working in Japan. During this time I researched and shot 37 Stories About Leaving Home, a documentary dealing with the complex relationships between a group of Japanese mothers and daughters. Interviewing women ranging in age from 3 to 82, the tape focuses on the great societal changes that have taken place between these three generations. The project was finished in 1996, with assistance from a production and post-production grant from The Japan Foundation and premiered at the New York Video Festival, The Walter Reade Theater, Lincoln Center, NY. 1993 Visiting Professor, DFFB/Deutsche Film und Fernsehakadamie, Berlin, (German Film and Television Academy) The DFFB in Berlin is one of the major film schools in Germany. I taught an intensive video production classes there, to third and fourth year film students who had a very advanced knowledge of film, but who had had little or no practical experience with video. The class was organized around the theme Truth and Fiction, and explored the nature and appearance of truth and fiction in documentary and fiction genres. 1993 Residency, Citˇ Internationale des Arts, Paris, France (sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the American Center, Paris) Citˇ Internationale des Arts offers studios and living spaces to a community of over 350 international artists. I spent a four-month residency there, and during this time I started shooting an ongoing series of short tapes entitled Fragments, as well as April 2nd, a tape about voyeurism and the camera as arbiter of power. 1992 Program Fellow, Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst Berliner Kunstlerprogramm - DAAD (German Academic Exchange Artists Program) The DAAD invites roughly fourteen international artists a year to work and live in Berlin. I spent my time in Berlin shooting an essay about Germany after reunification, from the point of view of people living in Berlin. The final project, a sixty-minute experimental documentary entitled Former East/Former West deals with issues of national, ideological and cultural identity. It was completed with grants from the NEA and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Former East/Former West had its premiere in the video section of The Thirty - Second New York Film Festival. 1985-92 On-line, Off-line and High Definition Videotape Editor, Rebo Studios Rebo Studios was the first high definition studio in the United States, known for their innovative and often surprisingly experimental productions. During my time there I worked as an off and on-line editor on a wide range of productions, including documentaries, feature films, experimental projects, children's programs, advertisements and music videos. Projects I participated in won numerous awards; I was personally awarded two Monitor Awards for best editing. 1983-85 Adjunct Faculty, Video, The New School for Social Research, New York The New School for Social Research offered production and post-production courses in video at Global Village. I taught beginning and advanced courses in video editing from both a creative and technical point of view. 1980-85 Cameraperson/Off-line Editor/Producer, Rough Cut Video Services Rough Cut was an artist-owned facility, which produced work for commercial clients as well as numerous visual artists and art video makers. I worked editing, shooting and producing a wide range of projects during my time there. I have also worked as a freelance editor for independent directors and artists such as Jenny Holzer, William Wegman, Zbigniew Rybzynski, Barbara Kopple, John Sanborn, Laurie Anderson and Keith Haring, as well as on commercial projects for Sesame Street, Frontline, Alive from Off - Center, Saturday Night Live, HBO, MTV, Showtime, ZDF/Germany, BBC/England, Channel 4/England, RAI/Italy. page top |
