Former East/Former West - Berlin Off/On Wall

Exile
Alexandrinenstr. 4
Berlin Germany

November 4th - December 5th
opening: Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 7:00pm

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall Exile Ausstellungsraum presents two projects focusing on the ramifications of the physical and emotional divisions between East and West created by the Berlin Wall.

Consisting of hundreds of street interviews done in Berlin two years after the Reunification, Former East/Former West is a vital, surprisingly open, and at times disturbing documentary about what it meant to be German at that particular moment in history. For forty-five years, residents of the divided city lived radically different lives, both in terms of ideology and everyday experience. Silver questions the very notion of a shared language, focusing on changing definitions of words for political and economic systems - democracy, freedom, capitalism, socialism - as well as words used to describe nations and identity - nationality, Germany, history, foreigners, home.

In Silver's 1994 project, Former East/Former West, the Berlin Wall has become an internalized psychological divide between the residents of the former East and West based on fundamental misconceptions, stereotypes, hopes and fears.

Speck's installation project Berlin Off/On Wall consists of a video, photographs and documents spanning more than 30 years. The video, filmed in 1978, shows a protest/performance by Berlin Painter Per Lke in collaboration with Video Artist Wieland Speck. In the video we see a man climbing onto the Wall and play the harp while being watched by security forces and spectators from both sides of the concrete divide. Decades later, Speck discovered photographs of said performance taken by Eastern border security forces in the archives of the former East German Staatssicherheit (Stasi). An extensive Stasi file, poetically entitled The Harp Player, was created in the aftermath of the protest/performance. The physicality of the Wall as an epitome of Cold War politics makes the conflict overt; both sides have no other choice than to watch one another through their circumscribed lens.

The juxtaposition of both projects commemorates the fundamental complexity of the transformation of a concrete external reality to an internalized mindset that is still relevant today.

The Crisis of Equality
steirischerherbst festival of new art, 2009, Graz, Austria

12% activism
47% media criticism
23% crisis
18% contradiction

Are we living in an age of equality, of social mobility, diverse possibilities and options, but also, consequently, in a system of infinite interrelations? But then what models should one follow? The oft-cited war of civilisations contrasts with rhetoric of tolerant multiculturalism that in some cases degenerate into parodies of pluralism. So are we really divided by certain values and lifestyles that are not equally valid for everyone? But where are these values produced and circulated, now that the grand narratives have come to an end and mass medias social control of modernity has demised?

The Crisis of Equality presents examples of video works since 1967 in which the role of violence, the relationship of social movements and media, the role of information and messages, of participation and pop culture become the focal topics and thus the discourses that decide as to the validity of ideas, values and lifestyles. Heart in Heart
EMST/National Museum of Contemporary Art, Greece

June 11th - October 11th

On June 11, The National Museum of Contemporary Art will inaugurate heart in heart, a large scale exhibition in which 23 artists participate with paintings, sculpture, installations, drawings, photographs, videos and web art from EMST collection. Most of the works are presented for the first time. Occupying the entire exhibition space of the Museum in the Athens Conservatory building, the exhibition will last for four months.

Featured artists in the exhibition include: Carl Andre, Kutlug Ataman, Bill Viola, Nan Goldin, Ilya Kabakov, Pedro Cabrita-Reis, Yael Kanarek, Nikos Kessanlis, Kimsooja, Yorgos Lazongas, John Baldessari, Per Barclay, Pantelis Xagoraris, Nina Papaconstantinou, Steve Roden, Lucas Samaras, Shelly Silver, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, George Hadjimichalis, Mona Hatoum, Gary Hill, Rebecca Horn and Chryssa.

The exhibition presupposes a prevalent museological strategy today, which invites us to rethink the collection – a museum’s heart – as a constantly shifting field of new relationships among works, or, to quote the contemporary thinker Homi Bhabha, in terms of “transitionality” and translation. Through such a dynamic perception, works and their histories constantly change, new narratives and meanings emerge, past and present are reconstructed, one within the other.

The exhibition attempts to penetrate into secrets and hidden codes, personal diaries and intimate confessions, love letters and stories, fears, desires and emotions through contemporary and earlier works which conceal, converse and conflict with each other, store memories and touches, enabling the establishment of clandestine links among them as well as of a narrative which conceals and at the same time reveals through the images and the words of others.

Shelly Silver and Phillip Scheffner in conversation

Friday, July 10
7:30pm - 9:00pm

The Building
Platz der Vereinten Nationen 14a
Berlin, Germany

Shelly Silver will engage in a discussion with Philip Scheffner - an artist/videomaker from Berlin.
They will be talking about strategies, necessities and desires in light of the current state of the world, and they will also screen excerpts from their most recent works.

"Ive been thinking recently (and not only after visiting the Venice Biennale) how much of the artwork I see expresses what Id call a late or decadent phase of conceptualism, wondering why so many artists are opting at the moment for this strategy. Perhaps this is not surprising as it matches the fairly decadent time that seems to be just now coming to an end.

What Id like to focus on this Friday--with my long-time friend, the artist and filmmaker Phillip Scheffner is work that takes another strategy, one that is more common to literature (I spent this Christmas with Roberto Bolaos 2666). This approach is layered and at times messy, calling for getting ones hands dirty, searching out, muddling through, facing up to pesky details and unwanted contradictions that force one, midstream even, to switch paradigms or teams. This strategy may necessitate speaking, or, as necessary, stuttering. I want to talk about complexity an approach I am currently interested in, knowing it is not without its own false seductions, dangers, traps.

We plan to show some old and new work by ourselves and others including excerpts from our most recent films in complete world and The Halfmoon Files, and, if I can extract it from my computer, a work-in-progress."

The End: Analyzing Art in Troubled Times

curated by Eric C. Shiner, The Warhol's Milton Fine Curator of Art

the warhol
11 Sandusky Street
Pittsburgh, PA

The End: Analyzing Art in Troubled Times is a large group exhibition of contemporary artists that seeks to analyze
the power of art in troubled times. As the stability of the United States economy continues to erode and as talk of
a prolonged economic malaise spreads, everyone from the ruling elite to the man in the street worries with
ever-increasing frequency about what might happen should this country and perhaps the world beyond spiral into
economic collapse. The End confronts this hard-edged topic head-on.

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the 1989 events, and in anticipation of the looming mega fiestas organised by official Berlin,
this program takes a look back through two very different filmic approaches. Heard and seen from the Berlin of today, the answers to
Shelly Silver's questions in Former East, Former West (1994) show the differences in two languages, both called German.
The images bring to life those alien feelings and irritation that dominated people's minds, when faced with a situation that wasn't supposed to happen.
Manfred Jelinski's Ich hasse den 9.November (I hate the 9th of November) forms the reaction of the first surprised, then overstrained
West-Berlin creative to a comic documentary.

Opening 18.10.08 / 18:00 - 21:00

An artists work should not be viewed solely in terms of creation; it is also an act of resistance. But what does it mean to resist? Most of all, it means to have the strength to de-create what exists, to de-create reality, to be stronger than what is already there. Giorgio Agamben

In the media, historic events obey the laws of the media. They are simplified and misrepresented in single dimension. The false economics of current events and info-entertainment that govern the news grind reality up. Reality no longer has anywhere to flee. We see either clichs (the repetition and proliferation of the same thing, over and over) or we see nothing at all (discrimination against context and background, or censure). In both cases, there is a form of blindness whereby the world can no longer be looked at and the viewer is shipwrecked. The media knows only the here and now, that which is fleeting and bears no inner memory. The media shows facts over which we have no power.

Interstitial Zones wishes to make a stand against the politics of invisibility with which the media confront us on a daily basis. How can we possibly speak of images when the surfeit of information is such as it is? How might we again retrieve the rational from the emotional, the sensational? How do we touch on new political conditions if they continue, by definition, to be a blind spot for the media?

Curated by Paul Willemsen with contributions by Franois Bucher, Guy Debord, Sebastian Diaz Morales, Christoph Draeger, Claire Fontaine, Joan Fontcuberta, Jean-Luc Godard, Armin Linke, Gianni Motti, Melik Ohanian, Shelly Silver, Speculative Archive, Aldo Tambelli and Klaus vom Bruch et alia.

in complete world is a feature-length documentary made up of street interviews done throughout NYC. Mixing political questions (Are we responsible for the government we get?) with more broadly existential ones (Do you feel you have control over your life?'), the film centers on the tension between individual and collective responsibility.

in complete world can be seen as a user's manual for citizenship in the 21st century, as well as a glimpse into the opinions and self-perceptions of a diverse group of Americans. It is a testament to the people of NYC in this new millennium, who freely offer up thoughtful, provocative and at times tender revelations to a complete stranger, just because she asked.

On the 14th of June, in this presidential election year, Shelly Silver proposes a day of questions and answers centered around individual and collective responsibility*, or, more specifically, where we find ourselves as American citizens in this place (NYC) at this time (2008). These are the issues taken up by a large group of New Yorkers in Silver's soon-to-be-finished film in complete world

*The definition of the term responsibility is: answerable (to another, for something), from the Latin responsus: 'to respond.' Starting with the word 'responsibility' leads quickly to the necessity for discourse.

SELF-CONFESSION VS. EXPLOITATION

IMPAKT FESTIVAL
Filmtheater 'Hoogt, Hoogt 4 & Theater Kikker, Ganzenmarkt 4, Utrecht

Privacy issues, confrontational self-portraits, camera scrutiny and the internet as public diary

Under the pressures of a highly individualized world, the engagement with the Self represents a never ending source for cultural production, from the literary diary of the 19th century to personal video clips on the internet that facilitate a new immediacy to make one's intimate life public. Against this background,"Self-confession vs. Exploitation" examines the ambivalent relationship between privacy and intrusion, the integrity of the subject and the discerning gaze of the camera.

High Risk Citizen

organized by Mary Billyou & Eva Daz

Art in General
6th Floor Gallery
79 Walker Street
New York, New York 10013

opening Thursday April 17, 6-8pm
show runs 04.17.08 05.03.08

High Risk Citizen explores forms of political resistance and public engagement today, as considered by contemporary artists working in film and video. The works in the exhibition move between depressed responses to the ways in which collective, political efficaciousness has been curtailed, and euphoric re-imaginings of sites of robust social and civic culture.

evolution de l'art

a collaboration between SPACE, Bratislava, Slovakia (Juraj Carny, Diana Majdakova and Lydia Pribisova) and Cesare Pietroiusti.

Evolution de lArt is a gallery for contemporary art which only sells artworks that are immaterial, with no physical residue. It does not release certificates of authenticity, nor statements or receipts. EdlA will represent, on a non-exclusive basis, artists whose artwork is, at least in the case of some specific projects, alien from any physical-material component.

EdlA offers the possibility of becoming contemporary art collectors to the widest possible audience. Therefore the gallery will offer artworks at a range of very different prices, including some that can be purchased for a few Euros. Purchases can be made at the headquarters of the gallery (Lazaretska 9, Bratislava) or through the website www.evolutiondelart.org.

with Ayreen Anastas, John Menick, Michael Rakowitz, Wolfgang Staehle, Giancarlo Norese, Mira Podmanicka, Roman Vasseur , Nina Hoechtl...

Please visit and buy the immaterial:

No United States
at Kunsthalle Wien

01. Februar - 28. Februar 2007

Eine Kooperation mit der Ursula Blickle Stiftung und der Universitt fr Angewandte Kunst Wien.

"Its easy enough to locate a country physically, but how to locate it aesthetically, politically, intellectually or emotionally? If you believe in polls, 36% of Americans are worried about global warming and 63% are absolutely certain of the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ. On a more quantifiable level, 85% of Americans dont own passports and 12.5% Americans are below the poverty line. Some of these trends are global the assets of the richest 447 people on the planet equal the assets of the poorest 2.5 billion people, 52% of the world population."

When I started putting together this program, I knew there was no way to capture a balanced or complete picture of the United States. Instead I chose videos based on the way they reverberated with and expanded on recent events, moods and histories, jamming personal with political, inside and outside, a surface agitation with a deeper frenzy. Rather than expressing unity, they each in fact point to various breakdowns, whether within the image itself, or in the realms of individual or collective belief."

desiredescape.net
website launch!

Im very pleased to announce the launch of the website:
http://www.desiredescape.net

an experiment in community building and storytelling.

Andrea, the creator of the website, is the fictional heroine of my upcoming film project desiredescape.net. She starts the website as a means of escaping her life in a conservative Upstate New York town. In her own words:

I want this to be a website for all of us who wish to escape some part of our lives (our job, famly, relationship, political or economic situation, city, country world), where we can share stories about our current lives, as well as our plans, hopes and strategies for our desired escape.

The stories Andrea receives will influence the trajectory of her story, and the images, sounds and videos uploaded to the site will be incorporated into the final film.

So if you need to escape (or have successfully escaped already) please visit and contribute often! And if youve never wanted to escape, but are nevertheless curious about those of us who do, please visit too.

Also, if you have any suggestions about how the site is functioning (or not) please let me know. Were still ironing out the kinks, expanding usability and are actively looking for feedback.

A woman photographs moments of intimacy in public space. She approaches people on the street and, as so much of the social has moved to the web, through an ad on an Internet dating service: I am looking for people who would like to be photographed in public revealing something of themselves

What Im Looking For narrates this adventure at the intersection between public space and the internet, still and moving images, control and desire.

MoMA Film at The Gramercy Theatre
Monday October 13th, 6:00 pm

127 East 23 Street (at Lexington Avenue)/New York, NY 10010

An intimate portrait of a group of Japanese women talking about their lives, families and society. Mixing childhood memories, frank statements, epic events and quotidian details; the film bears witness to the strength of these women and the difficulty of their choices, as they navigate between personal needs and familial and societal pressures.

The interviews are framed by a traditional Japanese folktale; a magical and somewhat shocking narrative of a mother's search for her abducted daughter, kidnapped by a monster on the eve of her wedding.
